A weekend of racing for great causes

Rob Bosinger Memorial Weekend commemorates a passionate racer

Banff, Alta – Rob Bosinger was a dynamic young skier who loved head-to-head racing, and volunteered countless hours to provincial and national ski organizations.

That's why a whole weekend of ski racing at Sunshine Village has been named in his honour since his untimely passing in 2005. This weekend marks the fourth annual Rob Bosinger memorial weekend, which packages three unique races over three days and draws more than 350 racers.

Several members of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team will be present this year: 2009 World Downhill Champion John Kucera, Jan Hudec (2008 Silver winner in Worlds Downhill) and Paul Stutz and Brad Spence, who will both be racing.

The Rob Bosinger Gentle Giant Slalom team event will be held on Friday, May 1 – pitting teams of four in races for fun and prizes. It's followed by the Pilsner Awards Party at 3:30 p.m.

The Bozo Cup Pro-Am follows on Saturday with three categories: Pro and Amateur Division races, and new this year, the Masters Class 38+. The format is a round robin; lose once and you move to the mudslide, lose twice and you are done for the day. The race features automatic start gates, differential timing, two pro jumps and no grooming.

Saturday evening, the Bozo Cup Victory Party will be hosted by Hoodoo's Lounge in Banff starting at 8 p.m.

The Felix Belczyk Kinder Cup on Sunday features the same round robin format as the Bozo Cup. There will be three divisions, male and female; K1 (11-12), K2 (13-14) and Jr FIS 15-17).

The weekend of racing will be hosted by the Bosinger family and Jock Wilson from Calgary's AM 770 CHQR radio station. Close to $30,000 was raised during last year's event for The Canadian SADS Foundation and the Rob Bosinger Ski Training Scholarships.

The weekend is named after Rob Bosinger, who died suddenly of a heart condition in May 2005. Known to close friends by his nickname "Bozo", Rob was an alumnus of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team, former Canadian National Ski Team coach, Alberta Alpine K2 coach, and a founder of the series which started 10 years ago, loved ski racing, especially, head-to-head ski racing. He helped found the ski racing weekend 11 years ago.
