Thursday’s snowy opening bodes well for a spectacular season at Sunshine Village Ski & Snowboard Resort. And the weekend looks even better. Snow continued to fall throughout the day, building the base and allowing snow safety officials to open more runs. By mid-afternoon, the Bird Cage, Star Trek and Rollercoaster runs were open, bringing the total number of runs available to 27. Four quads were spinning for opening day: Strawberry, WaWa, Wolverine and Jackrabbit. “We put our order in, and Mother Nature received,” said Al Matheson, Mountain Operations Manager. “We’re pretty happy.” The next goal is Mount Standish, but Matheson says it is doubtful for this weekend. (Watch Sunshine’s Facebook and Twitter accounts for the latest on run status.) Sunshine is famous for its legendary all-natural champagne powder snow and its unique snow farming technique, which uses 35 km of snow fencing to capture the snow on the resort’s three big mountains. This season is expected to bring more record snowfalls, thanks to the lingering La Nina weather effect. You can watch Sunshine’s progress on our mountain cams. And check back frequently to our conditions page for updates on the snow pack. Rooms are still available this weekend at the Sunshine Mountain Lodge for a spectacular early season special. Passholders can book a room for as little as $99 and catch fresh tracks.
