Sunshine to host Sport Check Canadian Ski Cross Tour Nor-Am Cup

April 3, 2014

Sunshine Village will host Canada’s future stars as they compete against other up-and-coming athletes from the USA and around the world on the resort’s world class slopes in the Sport Check Ski Cross Tour Nor-Am Cup.

The event, which takes place on Sunshine’s world class slopes from April 7 -9, will see competitors including team members from Canada’s national ski cross teams as well as provincial ski team athletes compete in the final Nor-Am Cup race of the season.

Guests of Sunshine Village are invited to cheer on Canada’s next generation of skiing elite as they compete in the widely popular action-paced and adrenaline-fuelled sport. Races take place on the bottom of South Divide, easily accessible for viewing via the Great Divide Express Quad.

At Nor-Am Cup races, Canada’s aspiring ski stars get the chance to compete at an international level and enable athletes to prepare mentally and technically for World Cup racing. The season-long Nor-Am series comes to a head at the Nor-Am finals, which takes place at Sunshine Village this April 2014.

In alpine, the top two overall competitors for each discipline at the end of the finals win a World Cup spot for the following season in that event.

Canada has won every overall Nor-Am Cup in women’s ski cross since the first Nor-Am ski cross season in 2009-10.

Ski Cross 101

Ski cross courses include both naturally occurring terrain and artificial features including big-air jumps, “tabletop” jumps (where the take-off point is at a similar level to the landing spot), rollers (rounded and/or wavy terrain) and high-banked turns.

But what sets ski cross apart from other sports, including alpine skiing, is the fact that there’s more than one skier racing down the course. Four to six racers go head to head, at the same time, with the aim of finishing first.

The unique combination of technically-challenging terrain and head to head racing make ski cross a thrilling spectator sport.
