Sunshine Village hosts the Southern Alberta Freestyle Competition
Sunshine Village guests can prepare to be dazzled this weekend, as Southern Alberta’s brightest young alpine athletes compete during the Southern Alberta Freestyle Competition on February 9 – 10th.
Hosted by Sunshine Village’s own Southern Alberta Freestyle Ski Club and the Alberta Freestyle Ski Association, the event will feature both a moguls and slopestyle race, chock full of exciting jumps, flips and epic ski racing.
Over 102 young Albertans between the ages of six to 16 will be competing in the event, held at the popular ski and snowboard resort.
“This is such a great event to watch, because there will be kids doing back flips and 360’s, while racing down the course,” said Scott McKnight, Program Director for the Southern Alberta Freestyle Ski Club, in reference to Saturday’s moguls competition.
“We also have the freestyle event, which is such a great spectator sport because people can get up nice and close to the action. In the terrain park, kids will be using rails, boxes and jumps to impress the judges and people should expect to see some big tricks in the park.”
Racing will take place at 10 a.m. each day, with Saturday morning kicking off the moguls race on the Scapegoat ski run off of Goat’s Eye Mountain. The event continues Sunday with the slopestyle event, taking place in the Grizzly Terrain Park beside the Continental Divide High Speed Quad Chairlift.
Lana Hill, Director-at-Large for the Southern Alberta Freestyle Ski Association is thrilled to see the event take place on Sunshine’s slopes.
“Sunshine Village provides the ideal terrain to host such an exciting competition,” begins Hill, whose nine-year-old daughter is competing in this weekend’s event. “These races are such a great way to encourage healthy competition, as we place a strong emphasis on having all the kids cheer on each other.”
Sunshine Village gondola and lift ticket holders will be able to cheer on the young racers throughout the weekend’s event.
