Sunshine celebrates a successful ski season with 86th Slush Cup

May 12, 2014

Sunshine Village will cap off the 2013-2014 ski season this Victoria Day long weekend with a plethora of spring time snow-filled activities, including Canada`s Best Party with the 86th Annual Slush Cup.

The storied event will see skiers and riders fly down the Pando Hill beside historic Mad Trapper’s Saloon in outlandish costumes as they strive to make it across a pool of icy cold slush water. The brave guests who attempt this annual feat will be up to receive such prestigious accolades including best belly flop, best face plant and biggest splash to name a few.

Long weekend on-mountain events will also include live music by Canada`s own Shred Kelly, who will be rocking the crowds on the Pepsi Stage with their aptly coined stoke folk this Saturday May 17th and Sunday, May 18th. Then, returning favourites New Moon will amp up the Slush Cup festivities as the final act in the 2014 Sunshine Spring Concert Series on holiday Monday, entertaining crowds with their signature reggae-infused rock beats.

The resort will also feature the first ever Salomon SlushShine Rail Jam on Saturday, May 17th, which will see skiers and riders perform their best tricks across features strategically placed over a newly constructed slush pond.

In addition to taking in the last ski and snowboard turns of the season, Sunshine Village guests can also cheer on the ladies and men, who raised funds in support of breast cancer awareness with the 6th annual Bikini`s and Boardshorts Ski & Ride on Sunday, May 18th

The weekend`s events will culminate on Monday, May 19th with the 86th Annual Slush Cup taking place from 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m, which has been recognized by both Skiing Magazine and Ski Canada Magazine as one of the top spring parties in North America.

Sunshine`s Slush Cup History

In March 1928, two young men skied up Healy Creek to Sunshine. They headed for a cabin built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, planning to use this as a break during their journey across the Great Divide.

The snow was deep and the two men, Cliff Whyte and Cyril Paris, missed the cabin and slept in a hollow they dug in the snow. They awoke the next day and in poor weather broke a trail over Citadel Pass. They were the first people to ever ski the area.

Later that spring, skiers played in the runoff beginning the long standing Slush Cup tradition.

From then on, skiers would annually play and splash, laugh, drink and sing in the waters as the snow melted at winter’s end.

In the 1980s, the event was opened to the public and continues today with thousands of spectators gathering on the Monday of the May long weekend.

Today, Slush Cup participants are encouraged to dress to impress, with skiers and riders donning original costumes as they try their hand at clearing the ice-cold pond.
