Meet Derek Graham: Mr. Slush Cup 2017

Every year, a slew of participants brave the elements to compete for the title of Mr. Slush Cup. Each year, the winner takes home the bragging rights. This year, we upped the prize and added a $1000 cash cheque for both Mr. and Mrs. Slush Cup.

The title of this year’s Mr. Slush Cup was crowned to Derek Graham (a.k.a. Scuba Steve). Graham made the 100-foot pond skim look easy while wearing a full wetsuit, snorkel, and inflatable tube.

“How did he make it across in snorkel goggles...I can’t even walk a straight line in those things,” the judges exclaimed. For the judges, Derek’s costume combined with his slush jump and pond skim made him the winner.

Postseason, we caught up with our 2017 Mr. Slush Cup, Derek Graham to learn how life as the reigning Mr. Slush Cup is treating him.

“You know, it’s been great,” laughs Graham, “my kids still can’t believe I won, they think I’m crazy."

Going in to Slush Cup, Graham says he didn't expect to win. To win, he knew he had to make it across. Hit the jump, land light and ride. Once across, Derek realized,"Hey! I might have a chance."

When we asked Graham, why Slush Cup? He explained that he loves how the season-ender event allows him to push his boundaries and challenge himself. As a lifelong skier, Derek is wise to the lessons of resiliency, perseverance, and self-accomplishment that can be learnt on mountain. These mountain lessons are lessons Derek aspires to teach his children.

Derek and the Graham family are Sunshine regulars; they spend as much time as they can on the mountain. When we asked Derek what the highlight of his season was, he quickly replied without hesitation, "skiing Delerium Dive with my 11-year-old son."

“Sunshine Village is the reason I moved to the Bow Valley. I came to Sunshine (from Ontario) for a CSIA level 1 instructor training course. I fell in love with Sunshine, the mountains; I met amazing people and knew I had to live closer to the Canadian Rockies. Since moving to the Bow Valley, Banff Sunshine Village has been my happy place,” adds Graham.

For Graham, Slush Cup is a day that embodies everything that Banff Sunshine Village is to him. It’s the celebration of winter and the incredible snow season.

How, you ask, is Mr. Slush Cup spending his Slush Cup prize money? In Graham's words, “I’m buying my 2017/18 Banff Sunshine season pass.”

Derek assured us that he would be back at Slush Cup 2018 to defend his Mr. Slush Cup Title.
