Summer at Sunshine Village June 4, 2013 Summer at Sunshine Village offers panoramic mountain views Located in the heart of Banff National Park, amongst a breathtaking mountain backdrop, Sunshine Village is set to launch its summer operations with the opening of Sunshine Meadows on June 21st. Known as one of the most stunning alpine settings in the Canadian Rockies, and ranked the #1 day hike in Canada by Lonely Planet, Sunshine Meadows offers visitors unparalleled views. As spring turns into summer the meadows are in full bloom and ablaze with colourful wildflowers, setting off jaw-dropping views of surrounding peaks, including Mt. Assiniboine, “the Matterhorn of the Canadian Rockies.” Hikers can enjoy a picnic lunch next to the deep-blue Rock Isle Lake, which is flanked by some of the highest peaks in the Rockies. Hillsides covered in eye-popping wildflowers and unique lichens are home to a wide variety of wildlife. Visitors can catch a glimpse of everything from big horn sheep, to mountain goats, to a wide array of birds and of course, from a safe distance, perhaps even an awe-inspiring grizzly bear. As summer progresses to autumn, the trees change from vibrant yellow to deep red, offering another natural wonder. In all, you can find of some of the country’s most stunning natural terrain during your hike. Getting here Just an hour and a half from Calgary and 10 minutes from the town of Banff, the incredibly accessible day hike sits at 2,220 metres (7,300 feet), straddling the Continental Divide and boundary between Alberta and British Columbia. Visitors to the mountain are often overwhelmed by the transformation from powder-covered ski runs to a lush, blooming valley. From the Sunshine Village Bourgeau base, visitors can take a round trip bus ride up to the village, where the hike begins. White Mountain Adventures operates the Sunshine Meadows Alpine Shuttle every day from June 21st until Sept. 30th, weather dependent. Shuttles run every hour from the Sunshine Village parking lot and once daily from designated spots in the town of Banff.
