Anticipated system to bring white gold to the world class resort

January 9, 2014

Sunshine Village is set to receive another wallop of snow just in time for the weekend. A steady snowfall is reported to start falling Friday and into the coming weekend.

With nearly 30 cm (12 in) of snow falling on the resort the first week of January, this second weekend of 2014 is expected to bring another 30 cm (12 in) to the world class resort.

The storm system that is making its way from the West coast will be heading up to the Banff area to dump the dry, soft liquid gold before sunny skies return later next week.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has predicted that the Banff area will receive heavy snowfalls throughout the month of January, and so far the prediction has proven to be accurate.

“The heaviest snowfalls will occur in early to mid-January, mid- to late January, and mid- to late February,” states the Almanac.

Sunshine Village’s current snow pack has settled to 126 cm (50 in), providing a solid mid-season base and this weekend’s forecasted snow will result in nearly 350 cm (138 in) of the white stuff falling on the resort to date.

The recent snow also provides ideal conditions leading into upcoming winter events this first month of 2014.

Upcoming events include:

  • January 10 – The Big Bear freestyle event, Banff, AB.
  • January 18-19 – FIS learn to ski, kids ski free at Sunshine Village
  • January 18, 19 – Avalanche Awareness Days
  • January 25 – Salomon Demo Days
  • January 26 – Australia Day
  • January 12 – Feb 10 – Banff National Park Snow Days

Famous for its legendary all-natural champagne powder snow and its unique snow farming technique, Sunshine Village uses 35 km of snow fencing to capture the snow on the resort’s three big mountains.
