Meet The Team – Vol. 2

Following a legendary, record-breaking 2025–26 ski season, this series was kickstarted to highlight the incredible people who power our mountaintop resort. From seamless daily operations to consistently delivering outstanding guest experiences, it highlights the individuals who make the world-class skiing, family fun, and signature mountain memories all possible.

In Volume 2, we’re introducing a true veteran of safety at Sunshine, Matt Bielby. Originally from Portsmouth, United Kingdom, Matt joined the Sunshine team in 2014 as a ski patroller. Since stepping into a supervisory role in 2018, he has continued to grow as a leader and now serves as the Senior Supervisor of Public Safety and an Advanced Care Paramedic.

In this role, Matt oversees a wide range of responsibilities each day, including supervising ski patrol, snow safety and dispatch teams, managing daily public safety operations, and responding to injuries and medical emergencies across the mountain. With his expertise, guests can feel confident knowing they’re in capable hands when Matt is on the mountain. Read on to learn more about him!

What first drew you to Banff Sunshine Village, and what keeps you passionate about it today?

I love the unpredictability of the job and the problem-solving nature. Emergency response with the added complication of the environment, terrain, and weather makes no two calls the same. I also get to work with amazing people and being able to assist with positive outcomes despite injury keeps me passionate. Plus, the continued growth and development of the team and program make me very proud to be in the position I am, working alongside an industry leading patrol team with a solid reputation.

How has working at Banff Sunshine Village helped you grow personally?

Sunshine has helped me grow, supported me, and better understand what I want to do as a career and passion. Personally, I’ve grown in being able to keep a cool head under pressure, making impactful decisions, de-escalation of conflict, problem solving, and learning how to better communicate with people from different cultures and stages in their lives. Both staff and guests.

What’s something unique about your position that most people wouldn’t expect?

The number of departments and external agencies that we work in conjunction or cross paths with. Basically, every dept at Sunshine Village to local EMS, Parks Canada Visitor Safety, Park Wardens, RCMP, and STARS.

What’s a fun fact about you most people wouldn’t guess?

Prior to being a ski patroller, I was a commercial diver/hyperbaric medic working offshore oil and gas.
