Record Snowfall at Banff Sunshine Village

This ski season is one for the books as Canada’s Best Snow just can’t stay away from our three mountains!

The story begins on Hallo-weekend, when a surprise storm set the stage for our earliest opening in 40 years on November 2, 2025. Feeling like the season already delivered, December decided it was just gearing up and brought in 268 cm (106 inches) of snow to solidify itself as the fifth snowiest month on record.

Between November 2 and December 31, Banff Sunshine Village recorded a total of 416 cm (164 inches) of snow, marking the fourth snowiest opening season in our recorded history.

Much of this is thanks to Sunshine’s high-altitude location on the Continental Divide, which catches storm cycles that often bypass lower elevations—partly earning the resort its famous “Island in the Sky” nickname. But it may not just be December making headlines this year; Banff Sunshine Village is on track for a record-breaking snowfall season.

To date, the year’s ski season has produced 293 inches of snow in just 84 snowfall days. To put that into perspective, it easily surpasses our annual average of 239 inches. In fact, since 2012-13, only four seasons have recorded a higher total snowfall than we’ve received so far:

• 2016-17: 299 inches in 118 snowfall days
• 2017-18: 300 inches in 110 snowfall days
• 2020-21: 297 inches in 102 snowfall days
• 2021-22: 304 inches in 94 snowfall days

If snowfall persists, we’re on track to record Sunshine Village’s snowiest season in well over a decade. Like a first send, all we can do is huck and hope for more of Canada’s Best Snow because we just might make history.
