Taste of Trappers, Deep Fried Pickles

 Make at Home Fried Pickles

Missing your mid-day, or après, ski day Trapper’s break?

Us too. Luckily, this make at home version of our famous deep friend pickles will transport you mentally to the slopes of Sunshine as you savor the salty goodness of fresh fried pickles.

Don’t have a deep fryer at home, no problem. This recipe works best cooked on the stove.

•       12 large pickle spears drained and patted dry

•       1 cup all-purpose flour

•       1 tsp. garlic powder

•       ½ tsp cayenne pepper

•       1 tsp. sea salt

•       ½ cup buttermilk, or your preference

•       2 cups panko crumbs

•       Vegetable oil, for frying

Ready your pickles. If you’re working with large whole pickles, slice four big pickles lengthwise into thirds or quarters, depending on how thick you want them.

Set you mixing station. Set out 3 mixing bowls – a medium, a small, and a large. In the medium mixing bowl, stir together the flour, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Pour your buttermilk into the small bowl. The large bowl if your panko crumbs.

Pickles on the go.Working a pickle spear at a time, roll the spear in the flower, dunk it in the buttermilk, then dress it in a warm coat of panko flakes.

And Fry. Pour about 2 cups (or one and a half inch) of vegetable oil into a large, and deep, skillet. Heat the oil over medium heat until the oil reaches approximately 350 degrees F. You can test if the oil is ready, by flicking a splash of water. If the water sizzles, you’re good to fry.

Take it turn by turn. Tell the pickles to wait their turn, as you gently drop in 3 or 4 pickles at a time. Fry the pickles until the spears are golden brown on one side, about 1 minute, then flip the pickle over (using tongs) to golden the other side. Place the cooked fried pickles on a cooling rack, lined with paper towel.

Enjoy. We recommend serving them with a ranch dip.
