Who’s Responsible for Opening the Resort?
A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Sunshine Village
As our Island in the Sky springs to life each winter, guests arrive to sparkling blankets of Canada’s Best Snow, smooth corduroy, and lifts spinning like magic. But behind every chair turning and every run ready for its first tracks, a dedicated network of teams has already been hard at work—often long before dawn and long before the first snowflakes fly.
So, who’s responsible for opening the resort each morning?
The short answer: all of us.
The long answer: a well-orchestrated group of mountain specialists working in harmony.
Let’s take a look behind the scenes.
Trail Crew – The First Step to a Ski-Ready Mountain
Long before winter arrives, our Trail Crew is at it—pounding thousands of T-steel stakes into the ground, setting up snow fences, and shaping terrain to help Sunshine catch as much of Canada’s Best Snow as possible.
Throughout the season, this team is up early maintaining fences, managing hazards, and ensuring our alpine paradise is safe and skiable.
Lift & Gondola Operations – The Face of Our Mountain
When you load our gondola or a chairlift in the morning, you’re stepping into the world of Lift Operations—a team that begins their day in the dark. They perform thorough safety checks, sweep terminals, prep maze areas, and ensure every chair is ready to spin right at opening.
Their job doesn’t stop once the resort opens. They’re the friendly, attentive crew keeping everything running smoothly all day long.
Ski Patrol & Snow Safety – Keeping Our Trails Safe
Before the sun even brushes the tips of the Divide, Ski Patrol and Snow Safety teams are out on the mountain. Their morning includes avalanche assessments, explosive control when needed, signage checks, and securing terrain for public access.
They make the daily call that determines what opens, when it opens, and which areas need further work before they’re ready to welcome skiers and riders.
Our Snow Safety specialists constantly evaluate the alpine environment—studying weather, assessing snowpack, and monitoring natural hazards. Their expertise guides resort-wide decisions and helps ensure proactive risk management.
Grooming – The Overnight Artists
While most of Banff sleeps, Sunshine’s Grooming team carves their magic into the snow. These operators maneuver massive cats across steep terrain, laying down the early-morning corduroy our guests love so much.
Without their overnight work, we wouldn’t have the smooth, ski-ready surfaces that define mornings in Banff Sunshine Meadows.
Support Teams – The Unsung Heroes
From transportation and rentals to food and beverage, guest experience, and our hardworking maintenance and electrical crews, countless hands contribute to opening the resort each day.
Every department plays a crucial role in creating the seamless winter experience we provide at Sunshine Village.
One Mountain, One Team
Opening the resort each morning is a coordinated, mountain-wide effort that blends expertise, communication, and passion. Every shift begins with a commitment to safety. Every task supports the guest experience. And every team contributes something essential to making winter at Sunshine truly spectacular.
So the next time you’re gliding down your first run of the day, take a moment to appreciate the behind-the-scenes magic. Our mountain doesn’t wake up on its own—we wake it up together.
