Delirium Dive, Sunshine Village’s world-famous advanced, off-piste terrain opened its gate to keen skiers and riders today at 12:30pm.
The ultimate in big mountain experiences received the green light from Sunshine’s snow safety team and the Dive Proper, Bre-X and Starbucks runs are all open.
"It is my pleasure to announce the opening of our award winning advance terrain at Sunshine Village, Delirium Dive," said John Scurfield, Senior Vice president Resort operations, Marketing and Sales.
“The Dive is back by popular demand thanks to the huge snowfalls Sunshine Village has received this January."
With 600 acres and 2,000 vertical feet, this in-bound terrain is a perennial favourite for expert skiers and riders; however, this expert area is not for everyone.
Entry into the dive requires proper safety equipment and training, including an avalanche probe, a shovel, a beacon and a minimum of one buddy.
“Delirium Dive is considered a double black run,” said Al Matheson, Mountain Operations Manager, “and the status as to open or closed is updated hourly with considerations to weather, skiing conditions, and public safety resources. Please obey all closures and warnings and speak to the Ski Patrol staff for more up-to-date information.”
Matheson attributes the early opening to the hard work of the crew but warns there are still natural hazards.
“While early in the season for this advanced terrain to be open, the crews have been diligent in controlling the overnight snowfalls and improving stability within the area to the point that they comfortable to open to those meeting the criteria for entry,” he said.
If you’re not quite ready to tackle the dive, come out for the steeps or the groomed cruisers, as Sunshine Village has terrain to suit all levels of skiers and riders.
