Meet Ms. & Mr. Slush Cup 94!

Meet Harriet Lucas, Ms. Slush Cup 2024

Ask any Banff local, and they’ll tell you – There’s only one title, crown, first place finish that matters, as ski season in the Canadian Rockies wraps up. That title Ms. or Mr. Slush Cup. Last year, the highly sought after crown was won by former Sunshiner and current World Freeride Athlete Ms. Harriet Lucas.

With Slush Cup fast approaching, we caught up with the queen of spring skiing to ask her if she’ll defend her crown. A kick-ass ski babe, Harriet embodies the spirit of spring skiing. Read on to learn all about our reigning Ms. Slush Cup. Come Monday, we want you cheering her name as she straight lines it for the Slush Cup jump.

A Sunshine Regular with a Global Edge

Originally hailing from the UK, Harriet made Banff her home base several years ago. She joined our Sunshine Ski School to share her love of skiing. When she not playing on the slopes of Sunshine Village, she’s pushing limits on the Freeride World Tour, competing against the best skiers in the world on some of the planet’s most challenging terrain.

Her technical skills, creative line choices, and fearless attitude have made her an athlete to watch for on the international stage. Home in Alberta, she’s known for her big smile, big air, and even bigger love for spring skiing culture.

We asked Harriet what Slush Cup means to her, “To me, Slush Cup means the best end of season party, ever!”

IYKYK. Every May Long Weekend, Sunshine Village transforms into a high-energy celebration of spring snow and mountain madness. From costumes to cannonballs, it’s a day where skiers and snowboarders (try to) send it across a snow cold 110-foot pond of melt water. All in the name of lifelong bragging rights, laughs, and a proper send-off to winter. “No lies, Slush Cup is the highlight of my year. I have a calendar counting down the days and, (yes!) Slush Cup 96 is already on the calendar for next year.” Harriet says earnestly.

“I love Slush Cup because it’s so fun! There’s so much going on, the dance floor is crazy, and the actual pond skim is the gnarliest one out there. Last year the jump was huge!”

To win Slush Cup, you need to wow the judges with skill, attitude, flare, and of course a killer costume. Winning Slush Cup is about more than riding ability. At Slush Cup 94, Harriet had the judges laughing as she flew off the jump dressed as a shiny disco ball. “Honestly, my costume was a last minute put together. I didn’t know what to be, so I grabbed an emergency foil blanket, taped it to my jacket, covered my helmet in tiny mirror sticker and became a skiing disco ball. I don’t know what I’ll be this year. I think this year’s Slush Cup costume will be last minute too,” she laughs, “but sometimes last-minute decisions are the best ones!”

What’s Harriet Secret to Success?

When it comes to preparing for Slush Cup, Harriet’s ‘training regimen’ is iconic.

“My training involves staying hydrated* and straight-lining piste noir,” she says with a grin. In other words: send it fast, send it fun, and keep the good vibes flowing.

Her advice for any first-time pond skimmers this year? Keep it simple:
“Get a sick outfit, go as fast as you can, and have fun!”

Have you met Lachlan Frison? Our reigning Mr. Slush Cup, two years running!

An alumni of the Sunshine Speeders program, Lachlan grew up mesmerized by the folklore of Slush Cup. As a child, he recalls proudly proclaiming that when he turns 18, he’ll compete in Slush Cup.

As a young racer, Lachlan learned to master the art of skiing, riding Banff Sunshine’s big mountain terrain. As a young racer Lachlan Frison competed in almost every kind of ski event imaginable - from Giant Slalom to Super G.

True to his word, the year Lachlan turned 18, he signed up for Banff Sunshine’s Slush Cup, and to his surprise, he took home the title of Mr. Slush Cup. To quote Lachlan, "I waited patiently to be old enough to compete, and I was just happy to be in the event; I was definitely NOT expecting to win."

In 2023, as a rookie Slush Cup competitor, Lachlan left the fans and judges speechless, as there was no denying how impressive the University of Calgary Dino's skiers' race over the pond was.

That first Slush Cup Lachlan competed in, he admitted he felt a bit nervous at first. “I’d never had so many people watching me ski. There must have been thousands of people standing by the pool,” he explained.

Lachlan recalls taking a deep breath to calm his nerves, before refocusing on his main source of motivation to help get him to the finish line – the water! "I knew I had to make it across the slushy pool of ice water, and I did not want to be stuck swimming in ski boots. Knowing how cold the water was, I really didn't want to fall."

“I had to defend my title in 2024,” states Lachlan. “A one-time win can be credited to luck, but a repeat, now that’s skill.”  For the 94th Slush Cup, Lachlan stepped it up with his costume, dressing as the Penguin. In his final run, Lachlan impressed the judges by opening his umbrella mid-run while maintaining enough speed to spin out of the pool.

As the crowned winner of the 93rd & 94th Slush Cup festivities, Lachlan’s advice to anyone considering attempting to pond skim: "First off, ski with people who are slightly better than you for that extra push, and maybe try some waterskiing too!"

This year, Slush Cupper’s are excited to see Lachlan return to defend his title of Mr. Slush Cup. In addition to lifelong bragging rights, both Mr. & Mrs. Slush Cup win $1000 cash and a 25/26 season pass.
