02-19-2021 - WILD WEST OPENING DAY 5.jpg

As kids, we all grewn hearing the stories of the Wild West. You know the stories, the ones of wild cowboys taming the elements and the explored the vast wilderness of North America. Often challenging Mother Nature to a draw.

As wild as the west was, at Banff Sunshine if you ski on over to the Wild West, you can ski the Rockies untamed. The terrain of the extreme free ride zone located off of Goat’s Eye.

Express is raw, rugged, and rivioting. A tour down the chutes of Peyto’s or Wheeler’s will transport you back in time, as you discover a new passion for skiing and riding at Banff Sunshine. Although less famous than Delirium Dive, our “Wild West Free Ride Zone” is our most challenging and technical terrain. Described by guests, as a freeride zone hell fired spirit, and incredible powder pockets.

You’ll find the entrance to the Wild West off Sunshine Coast on Goat’s Eye Express. Just like an old western, you’ll need to gain entry to the area through a centennial guarded gate.

To ride the coveted steeps, skiers and snowboarders are required to ride with a buddy, to have avalanche gear (beacon, probe, shovel, pack), and know how to use the equipment.

Ready to explore the Wild West? You’re in luck as Wheeler’s and Peyto’s in the extreme zone is now open for the ski and snowboard season. For every cowpersons’ safety, The Wild West will have different operational hours than the rest of the resort, you can check the daily status online.

Now before you ski how the west is rode, here are a few things you’ll need to know.

The Wild West is Steep, Deep, and full of surprises. So much so, you’ll be forced to stay light on your toes. Different from the Dive, The Wild West is something of a slow burn. At first, you’re ushered into a powder utopia. A siren with perfect pitch and deep snow will temp and tease you as they you led to the tight chutes.

What’s Open: Wheeler’s & Peyto’s

Arthur Wheeler was an Irish immigrant, whose life work was to survey the Canadian Rockies including the Sunshine mountains.

Bill Peyto was the original mountain man and Banff’s first Park warden. You could say, he’s a “big deal” as his image to this day still greets you as you enter the town of Banff.

We guarantee both Wheeler’s and Peyto’s will push you out of your comfort zone. If you’re new to skiing the Wild West, take it slow. Wild West is our most challenging and technical ski terrain. Before upping the ante to ride the Wild West, we recommend you’re comfortable in Delirium Dive.
